When a Death Occurs

When a Death Occurs

Looking for the best support when arranging a funeral? Henry Powell & Son - Family Run Funeral Directors of Southampton is here to help!

Dealing with the death of a loved one is something people can never be fully prepared for. There are so many things to do and, at such an upsetting time, it can be difficult to even consider doing anything. You may have never dealt with a death before and you might find yourself unsure of what to do to make sure your loved one’s affairs are settled. The team at Henry Powell and Son will guide you through the process step by step.

The first thing you’ll need to do is report the death to the registrar.

This can be done by:

  • A relative
  • A hospital administrator
  • Someone who was present at the time of death
  • The person liaising with the funeral director

Next, the medical certificate describing the cause of death should be taken to the deceased’s doctor.

  • If the cause of death is sudden, unknown or unexplained, the case may need to be submitted to the coroner.

The death should be reported to the organisations below:

  • Banks and financial organisations
  • HM Revenue and Customs
  • DVLA
  • Child Benefit Office
  • Student Loans Company
  • National Insurance Contributions Office
  • Tax Credit Office
  • Passport Office
  • The local authority
